Hobbyist turned entrepreneur masters social media strategies with support from the Business Growth Programme


Established in 2017 by entrepreneur Ellie Scott, Kirkby based manufacturer Elligance retails luxury fragranced candles, wax melts reed diffusers and cleaning products, all manufactured by a small, dedicated team at its site on Webber Industrial Estate.

From very humble beginnings the business originated as a hobby in Ellie’s kitchen. Ellie’s love for candles had always been apparent, however whilst pregnant, Ellie became more conscious of the ingredients and chemicals used in mainstream brands. During her maternity leave she decided to make her own candles for personal use, substituting harsher chemicals for environmentally friendly alternatives including soy wax.

Pleased with her product Ellie started giving out samples of her candles to family and friends. Encouraged by the positive feedback Ellie decided to market her candles on Facebook and soon generated significant orders for her candles. As momentum continued to build, Ellie made the decision to take on a stall at Kirkby Market and early signs of demand were encouraging. Subsequently, word of mouth recommendation has ensured the business has continued to thrive.

Following a proactive approach by Knowsley’s Business Growth Team Ellie decided to take advantage of the free specialist support available to local businesses through the Business Growth Programme. Looking to capitalise on her social media presence Ellie opted to receive social media support and was allocated specialist consultant, Alistair Clarke from Tick the Publicity Box CIC.

Following Alistair’s guidance Ellie has taken a more strategic approach to her social media marketing. Ellie has streamlined her marketing to ensure all signage and company logos on display at her market stall mirror the visuals on the company website.

“I learnt the value of incentivising testimonials, creating short social media video content and effectively using social media to promote the brand and improve visibility online. I gained a lot of new information on digital marketing and the use of social media and had a lot to think about to adapt my social media output which I have since implemented”


Elligance continues to grow year on year increasing its customer reach. As well as domestic clients, the company also has commercial wholesale clients in the wider LCR region as well as Scotland, Newcastle and Essex.

Due to the company’s expansion, Elligance has now grown from one market stall to two, trading 3 days a week at the Kirkby Market as well as operating from Unit 11 Webber Industrial Estate on Knowsley Business Park where Elligance manufactures its products.
