Business Growth Programme helps enterprising business centre streamline its processes

Celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, the Maggie O’Neill Business and Training Centre in Huyton is a popular Knowsley venue offering staff training facilities, flexible office space and virtual offices at affordable prices.

Located on a main road connecting Liverpool with Prescot, the centre recently seized on the current trend for flexible working to develop a modern co-working space within a community network environment.

Aside from the excellent facilities on offer, this unique business centre has a greater cause, everything the centre does serves a wider purpose, as it reinvests money generated into support for the local community.

When the Invest Knowsley Business Growth Team hosted a series of specialist workshops at the centre, the team recommended the Maggie O’Neill Business and Training Centre itself should take advantage of the one-to-one support available through the Business Growth Programme.

It was an opportune time to offer support, as Centre Manager Patrick Hemus was in the process of further innovating the business. Whilst spinning many plates, Patrick soon realised that fast paced change needs underpinning with robust systems and processes. Upon registering for the Business Growth Programme, a fully funded specialist process efficiency consultant was swiftly engaged to help the business establish procedures and manage processes more effectively.

Patrick explains:

“When the Business Growth Team advised that we could become more efficient, we realised this could help our profits go further. We have room hire and an office leasing business NOT because we wanted to start a business, but because it enables us to invest in social projects. We want to help people, whoever they are. Our support is multi-faceted—from supporting refugees to working with the homeless, from feeding thousands of people locally to sending money around the world to global causes we believe in.”

The business has now fully embedded its hot desking facility to complement its existing training rooms and offices. Thanks to working with the specialist, who was able to make insightful recommendations to head in the right direction, Patrick worked with a specialist software company to create a new computerised system. Coworking, virtual offices, room hire, and private offices now live in one central system that is largely automated, all the way from initial enquiry to monthly or one-off billing. What was once difficult to manage with just two offerings is now simple to manage with four, with ease of implementation of any newly added services and new locations in the future.

Patrick is confident that the business can continue to evolve with a strong foundation of good systems and processes. He said: “As a result of the support I have been able to set long term goals and build a plan to get there. I have also organised company finances to generate reports so we can forecast our monthly and yearly cash flow to reinvest.”
